The Blessing with no Sorrow

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 10:22
“The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he addeth no sorrow with it.”
According to historians, the wealth of King Solomon was simply astronomical. He was at least the wealthiest person in history at that point. And yet the Bible says that it was God who gave Solomon his wealth. God gave that massive, lavish wealth to Solomon even though Solomon didn’t ask for it. King Solomon write this scripture verse and there is no one who understand this truth and experience this truth better than Solomon himself. If having great wealth and money itself were in fact evil, why would God choose to give someone large amounts of it? There are other people whom the Bible calls righteous who were blessed by God with great wealth. God blessed Job with great wealth after Job was tested. He also blessed Abraham and David with wealth. If God saw being wealthy is sinful then would He have blessed faithful people with money? Proverbs 10:22 says, “The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it.”
The word ‘blessing’ here means a gift, an enrichment, an endowment. And this gift, enrichment, endowment comes from the LORD, Yahweh. It is explicit that God is the source of that blessing. In the some translation the word riches is replaced by the word wealth. Thus it says this blessing brings wealth to that person. The peculiarity of this blessing is that it adds no sorrow. There is no toil or labour which produces pain and sorrow to obtain that blessing. The word sorrow here is used of the curse of toil in man’s labour to obtain that blessing. Sorrow is the result of toil in human labour. There is none of this for this kind of blessing. The same word for sorrow also has reference to the pain in child bearing. It is said that child bearing is the ultimate pain among all pains. There is no intense pain equivalent even to child bearing for this kind of blessing. We just dedicated the daughter of Joel and Cheng. Many who are in touch with Eliana Lopez Lao would readily agree with me that this girl is always smiling. Her face is so pleasant. As an outsider I can witness that it brought a lot of joy to Joel and Cheng. So I can say that ‘The blessing of the Lord, it maketh rich, and he added no sorrow with it. Eliana Lopez Lao does not bring physical pain or emotional sorrow to the parents. She did not give vexation of spirit in the enjoyment of her. There is no grief or loss. There is no guilt in the excessive enjoyment of her. I was even surprised that the grandparents of Eliana Lopez Lao came happily to the church for the dedication when I thought it was a taboo for them to enter a born again church. And they too look simply happy. God’s blessing is pure and untarnished. There are a few underlying truths on Proverbs 10:22
1. The Blessing of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it
This blessing bring riches. As I say in some translation it is wealth. Wealth without God’s blessing bring only trouble with them. The riches on the other hand that comes from God has no sorrow. From this phrase it is also implied that it is God that gives to His beloved wealth and riches and blessings while they sleep in peace. When God blesses a man to be rich, He also gives contentment, happiness, and peace, which amounts to a double blessing. Whereas for others; (those that has no God and God is never a part of their lives, they toil early and late for riches in vain. Riches are not gotten merely by wisdom or diligence, but also, and especially, by God’s favour and blessing. What comes from the love of God, has the grace of God for its companion. The blessing to that person comes from the love of God and also the grace to enjoy that blessing. That is the wealth which is truly desirable.
Riches from God are without the sorrow of ill-gotten wealth. Ordinarily, riches bring a measure of fear, greed, guilt, hoarding, labour, pride, vanity, or worry. Wealth can be more trouble than good. Often the riches of the world are accompanied by great sorrow because they may:
(a) Have been obtained in a wrong way.
(b) Have become a source of idolatrous trust.
(c) Cause one to lust after forbidden things.
(d) Become the cause of erring from the faith
(e) Cause one constant anxiety lest he lose them.
I think the best examples are the politicians that you hear every day. Make an inventory of your previous presidents, even current senators. There are a lot of people who have their heart set on getting rich. The mistake made usually lays both in the nature of the thing they desire and in the way by which they hope to get it. Their riches has brought nothing but vexation, sorrow, guilt, pain and loss. The riches which wicked men gain are attended with the divine curse. God cursed that riches. It has brought nothing but many discontents, tormenting cares and fears. Horrors of conscience. That person dread the thought of being called to an account by God. He or she is being punished for the misenjoyment and abuse of this riches. Only fools think riches have no sorrow. Solomon wrote in an inspired philosophy of life called Ecclesiastes, in which he documented the pain and trouble of wealth. He called the troubles of the rich a sickness and evil disease, and he said this sorrowful condition was common. Rich men fear losing their riches: there are competitors to worry about; they know death ends the good life; they dread the tax man more than a thief; and the thought of a foolish heir wasting their estate is horrifying.
Paul warned about what happens to those who desire to be rich. I Tim 6:9-10 ‘But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.’
But there is a riches which Proverbs 10:22 describes that is so different from the riches we see around us. I was meditating on this verse and I think all true Christian should pray. ‘Father I ask for wealth and riches that comes from your favour and blessing because it adds no curse, no sorrow, no toil, no grief.
If riches come, I want them to be a source of comfort to my soul. I want to do good with them and to serve God with joyfulness and gladness of heart in the use of them. I want to be clean rich, not filthy rich!
2. Have a passion for this blessing
Concerning this riches, circumstances around you may not be favourable, but it doesn’t mean hopelessness. Your time will come. And this riches belongs to every child of God. Let me explain.
Gen 12:1-3 ‘Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.’
God blesses some people more than others simply because he knows they will be a blessing to others.
The LORD had blessed Abraham in all things. Listen to what one of Abraham’s servants said to the household of Laban, (Gen 24:34-36): And he said, I am Abraham’s servant. And the LORD hath blessed my master greatly; and he is become great: and he hath given him flocks, and herds, and silver, and gold, and menservants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.
No matter how much blessing I get, the supply of God’s treasure house will never be diminished. God wants you and me to want a blessing. That blessing comes when we get a revelation of his loving kindness toward us, when we have a passion for him to bless us, and when we actively pursue and seek his blessing. Let me continue the story.
Genesis 28:3-4, Isaac said to his son, Jacob, whose name was later changed to Israel: And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people; And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.’ Note the phrase ‘give thee the blessing of Abraham.’
Do you know that you are Abraham’s spiritual children? We inherit the blessings of Abraham. Pastor Lily preached on the Abrahamic Prosperity. This comes about through Jesus Christ when He said we shall inherit the Kingdom of God.
Matthew 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Even as the descendants of Abraham, Isaac & Jacob eventually inherited the land of Canaan that God gave them, so do we, who are favored by the Lord the King, inherit the kingdom he prepared for us at the creation of the world. God has many precious blessings for us that we did not work to earn. Look at the descendants of Abraham today; the Jews. Proverbs 10:22 is fulfilled among the Jews. When we mentioned the wealth of the Jew today, we don’t specifically pin point a certain Jews. Rather when he is a Jew he is usually wealthy. It is no merely the wisdom and intelligence of these Jews but rather it is God’s favour and blessing. I also made an observation among the Christians in Singapore. They are usually wealthy and occupy the higher class of society.
The Samaritan woman who came to Jacob’s well had her mind set on drawing some cold, clear water out of the well with a bucket let down into its depths on a rope. Jesus, however, had the real thing in mind – the water of eternal life. He told her it was a gift – the gift of God! What is a gift? A gift is a gift and you did nothing to earn it. The wealth of God for us is a gift.
If you think you are good enough (or can do enough good things) to receive the Holy Ghost, you are wrong. Chronic seekers of the Holy Spirit beg and seek to earn the baptism of the Holy Ghost, forgetting that IT IS A GIFT that is freely given. Same goes with wealth. Unconsciously we think that if we are good enough or do some good enough things, than God will give us wealth. But it is a gift. Christians believe that if you want a blessing you have to do something to get it from God. That’s legalism. If you can get a blessing by doing something, then you can manipulate God and that is witchcraft. God is not in “the let’s make a deal program”. He blesses you because He is Sovereign, because He is good, He is merciful, He is just and He wants to bless you ABOVE YOUR ABILITIES TO CONTAIN IT. I want you to understand that today. A Catholic boy was in a Catholic school and he wanted a bicycle and he told the Nun, “I like to have a bicycle” and she said, “If you’ll pray to the Lord tonight, He’ll bless you with a new bicycle if you’ll tell Him you’ll be good for 6 weeks”.
So he knelt down that night and said, “Dear God, if you’ll bless me with a bicycle I’ll be good for 6 weeks.” He said, “Scratch that God, I can’t be good 6 weeks.” He said, “Dear God, if you’ll bless me with a bicycle, I’ll be good for 4 weeks” He said, “Scratch that, I can’t be good for 4 weeks.” He said, “Dear God, if you’ll bless me with a bicycle, I’ll be good for 2 weeks.” He said, “Scratch that.” He looked over and saw a statue of the Virgin Mary, wrapped it up in a bed sheet, put it under the bed, and said, “Dear God, if you ever want to see your mother alive again, give me a bicycle.”
God is not in the “Let’s make a deal program”. He will bless you because He is good, He is faithful, He is just, He is compassionate, and He is your heavenly Father. God is a good God who wants to bless you, BUT HE CANNOT, because A.) We have resisted His blessing B.) We do not believe it C.) We don’t know how to pass it to our children.
Under Moses’ leadership, the Israelites doubted that God would give them the land of Canaan for a possession. Their reasoning was that they could not take the land because many of its inhabitants were giants. They were right; they could not – but God could! So because of their negative attitude, God excluded them. Today we say, it is so difficult to get wealth because there is so many obstacles. You are right. But God can. I believe many Christian today do not have the Abrahamic prosperity because of simply negative attitude and God excluded you in that blessing.
Then there is another group of people. After serving a 40 year probation, during which most of the unbelievers died, the younger generation presumed to capture the city of Ai in their own power, despite the fact that God said they would be defeated. They made the same error their fathers had made. THEY THOUGHT THEY COULD DO IT IN THEIR OWN POWER. In both instances, they disregarded the word of God.
We cannot get wealth. But Jesus has done it for us. I thank God that Jesus died on the Cross of Calvary for us. We underestimate the power of the Cross and the Resurrection of Christ. Jesus, in speaking to his disciples at the well in Sychar (Shechem), told them, “My meat (bread) is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.” He would work, so we could enjoy the fruit of his labor. He would build, so we could inherit. He would conquer, so we could be overcomers.
Luke 22:44 ‘And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. When Jesus was hung on the Cross, blood dripped slowly one drop by one drop to the ground. Something miraculous is happening to the ground and it spread to the whole earth. The curse has been broken. The ground, which had been cursed by the LORD because of man’s transgression, and would henceforth bring forth fruit only by hard labor and sweat, was blessed to feel the touch of Jesus’ sweat. Because he labored in prayer, one day the earth itself will be restored to its pristine glory of an Eden-like condition. But right now it is having an effect on all those that are align with Jesus. Jesus has connected us to the blessing. Jesus has started the original intent for His people to live in the blessing. God has empower you to succeed. No matter where you are in the progress of your life as a Christian, learn more about God and His relationship with you as you dig deeper into the vital message of His blessing.
Those who obey the Word of God will inherit the kingdom. It’s all free. Just love God, serve him, cling to him and do His will. All is prepared for you. You can enjoy the Garden of Eden. You can inherit the blessings! Blessings which are stored for you are to be inherited. The time will come and for some the time has come to receive this harvest of blessings.
3. Take care that your use of the money the Lord gives you is to meet the demands of God and honour of God.
There is only one safe way to acquire wealth and that is by the blessing of the Lord upon your hard work and faithfulness to him. But once you get wealth, take care the blessings meet the demands of God and bring honour to God. Some men get rich as a result of time and chance – not from diligence, skill, strength, or wisdom. Of course, God rules all time and chance. Promotion comes from the Lord (Ps 75:6-7). When God promotes a man to be rich as a blessing, He is kind enough to also give that man the spiritual gifts to be content, happy, generous, and secure in his wealth (Eccl 2:24,26; 3:13; 5:18-19). Such men are not dependent on their wealth. In fact, these men happily scatter their wealth by giving it to the poor (I Tim 6:17-19).
Almighty God has put His name on the line and said, “I will bless you with the resources of heaven. All that is in heaven and earth is your’s, because we are heirs and joint heirs with Jesus Christ.” It ought to make you leap right out of your socks and say “Praise God”. One of the foremost reason for God blessing Abraham is that the neighbours around will notice, he is such a special fellow and Abraham would glorify the name of God. Through him the world would come to the salvation of God. Likewise it is the same for us. The blessing we have is going to be different from the riches of the worldly man. It is so different that others would want it to. We should go about doing good and helping others as a result of the wealth of the LORD.
Prayer at the Altar
Do you want the blessing? Do you want your children to have it? Can we stand to our feet and bow our heads. Pray this prayer with me please; Lord Jesus Christ, I confess my sins, and I ask you to forgive me of all of my sins, and cleanse me from all unrighteousness. I confess that you are the Lord, and that you are the Savior. That you have risen from the dead and that you sit at the right hand of God the Father, from this day forward, I submit my life to You. To serve You, heart, soul, mind and body. I will obey Your Word & follow You to the last day I live. In Jesus name. I am saved, I am forgiven, I am justified, I am in the family of God. Lift your hands and thank the Lord for salvation.
God has blessed, God is blessing, God will bless. Out of confusion and chaos will come the perfect answer, because I’m blessed.
Out of sorrow and heart ache will come joy unspeakable and full of glory, because I am blessed.
Out of turmoil will come peace that surpasses understanding, because I am blessed of the Father.
Out of sickness and pain will come health and healing because I am blessed of God the Father.
Out of poverty will come wealth because I am blessed of God the Father.
