Smear the Blood

Scripture Reading: Exodus 12:1-10
GOD said to Moses and Aaron while still in Egypt, “This month is to be the first month of the year for you. Address the whole community of Israel; tell them that on the tenth of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one lamb to a house. If the family is too small for a lamb, then share it with a close neighbour, depending on the number of persons involved. Be mindful of how much each person will eat. Your lamb must be a healthy male, one year old; you can select it from either the sheep or the goats. Keep it penned until the fourteenth day of this month and then slaughter it—the entire community of Israel will do this—at dusk. Then take some of the blood and smear it on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses in which you will eat it. You are to eat the meat, roasted in the fire, that night, along with bread, made without yeast, and bitter herbs. Don’t eat any of it raw or boiled in water; make sure it’s roasted—the whole animal, head, legs, and innards. Don’t leave any of it until morning; if there are leftovers, burn them in the fire. (Exodus 12:1-10 MSG)
This passage of scriptures is popularly known as the Passover as is specifically mentioned in verse 11 “This is the Passover Festival in honour of me, your Lord. (Exodus 12:11). Prior to this chapter, God deals with Moses, the deliverer. In this Chapter God deals with the deliverance. Prior to this it was the deliverer. Now it is the deliverance of the people of God. The deliverance was not by Moses but by the blood. It is a deliverance out of bondage. What can we learn from this portion of scripture?
1. A New start in life
The Passover is to be the first month of the year, or more specifically the first month of the New Year of Israel’s religious year. God is starting a New Year with God’s people. That month is called ‘Abib’ or in some translation ‘Nisan’. Nisan means early, start. I believe God is calling individual that it is time to start your life with God. And to start it early. God wants you to have a new start in life with him. Life begins when we orientate ourselves toward God and His will. We know that Nisan falls in the month of March or April. Interestingly Good Friday and Easter Sunday falls in the month of March or April. What is the significance of Nisan?
It will be a new age. It is a new era. God want to enter into a new era with this church. He wants to do a new thing especially in the year 2015. You are going to experience a new reality with God in this life even though you are still in this earth. The new reality involves a new power, a new experience, and a new revelation of God. I am not talking about the life hereafter. I am talking about a New Life with Christ on earth. Start a new life with God. We are to receive a new identity as the favoured people of God. We are going to experience the supernatural favour of God.
There will be new word for us, initiating a new reality. As is often with the word of God, the NEW begins with God’s word, even before future event bear witness to that word. I want to say that this year will be the church year where many of the promises will be fulfilled. God has given us WORD concerning the future events even before it takes place. With it we will see the supernatural favour of God.
2. The smeared blood
You are to take a lamb, one lamb for a house. Your lamb or kid shall be without blemish, a male of the first year; you shall take it from the sheep or the goats. (Exodus 12:5 AMP). They shall take of the blood (of the lamb) and put it on the two side posts and on the lintel [above the door space] of the houses in which they shall eat [the Passover lamb]. (Exodus 12:7 AMP).
A lamb or a goat is a type of Jesus Christ. I Corinthians 5:7 put it so clearly, ‘For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.’ Jesus is without blemish. Without blemish means that it has nothing wrong with it. There is no defects. It says ‘If any family is too small to eat the whole animal, they must share it with their next-door neighbours. Choose either a sheep or a goat, but it must be a one-year-old male that has nothing wrong with it. And it must be large enough for everyone to have some of the meat. (Exodus 12:4-5)
They shall take of the blood and put it on the two side posts and on the lintel [above the door space] of the houses in which they shall eat [the Passover lamb]. (Exodus 12:7 AMP). Another translation puts it as they shall smear the blood on the two door posts and the lintel of the houses in which you will eat. The side posts are the two door post. Some translation puts it as the door frames of the houses. The lintel is above the door space. The blood was to be put, smeared, and sprinkled on the top and at the two sides of the door. In Exodus 12:22 Moses mentioned Hyssop. It says ‘take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin.’ It is a kind of plant. Hyssop was chosen for its thick roots which makes it a good sprinkler. Then death would bypass our homes.
The blood on the doorposts symbolised protection of the shed blood of Jesus Christ. There is power in Jesus’ blood. The blood had to be applied to the door post to be effective. If they had collected the blood and left it sitting on a basin outside the door – the death angel would have entered and death would have come. The blood had to be smeared on the door post and on the sides. Also I believe it is the head of the family that does it. I speak to you today, those who is a child of God. God has given you spiritual authority over your house. You are the spiritual head of that home of yours. You have to personally and verbally apply the blood on the door post of your heart and on the door post of the hearts of those in your family. All that is within the house then are protected. How about those that are really stubborn and rebellious and evil within your house. There is a portion of scripture that tell us this. You can spare the life of a first-born donkey by sacrificing a lamb; if you don’t, you must break the donkey’s neck. You must spare every first-born son. (Exodus 13:13 CEVUS06). The donkey is representation of stubbornness. They are stubborn and rebellious and even evil. Well, they can be spared by sacrificing the lamb. You can plead the blood upon the door post of their heart and God will spare them. If you don’t do that their neck will be broken. Tell me a person whose neck is broken and can still live. There is no cure for sin in psychology. There is no help for your sin in self-justification. They is no healing for your sin in blaming others. There is no lifting of sin by any other source than the blood of Jesus. When the bowls of wrath are poured out, when the vials of plagues are opened, when the horsemen of famine, pestilence, war, and death are turned loose, when the angel of death began to reap on the earth, there is no place to escape, run or hide but by the smeared, sprinkled blood of Jesus. When you go home today, put your hand over the door posts and declare, “I place the blood of Jesus on this home of mine. At the altar afterward declare ‘ I place the blood of Jesus upon the hearts of my children. Upon yourself declare ‘ I sprinkle the blood of Jesus upon my heart, upon my life. If you are worried right now about someone in your family and especially he is a Christian but out of God’s will, declare ‘I smear the blood of Jesus upon his or her heart, upon his or her life.’ I personally believe when you declare by placing the blood of Jesus upon him or her, it can protect his life as well as deliver him from bondage. You say Pastor, I think you are a little bit superstitious. When this is not the only time when blood is sprinkled in the Old Testament. The sprinkling of blood has a special significance to the Jew. In Exodus 24:8 ‘Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people.’ Moses sprinkled the blood on Aaron, his sons, and their garments which hallowed and consecrate them to the Lord. (Ex 29:21 & Lev 8:30. The sprinkling of the blood will cleanse your conscience. It justifies us and saves us from the wrath, from death. It is by means we overcome the accuser of the brethren, which is the devil.
Some people here have the spirit of death following you. Oh please believe me that there is the destroyer. He is the angel of death. How about the plague on earth? Bill Gates just recently talked about a new war that we could be entering into in this world. He is referring to epidemic like Ebola, bird flu, MERS. Isn’t all this plague. Well God did say that all these diseases of Egypt will not come upon you. Deu 7:15 says “The LORD will keep you free from every disease. He will not inflict on you the horrible disease you knew in Egypt, but he will inflict them on all your enemies. Egypt represent the world. The disease of the world will not come upon you. How? Eat the lamb. Fellowship with Christ and sprinkled the blood of Jesus upon the door post of your heart and the door post of your homes. Your parents, siblings, children and even relatives lives in your homes.
The word Passover is ‘pasach’. It is translated as ‘pass over’. It means became lame, halt and leaped. As birds flying, so will the Lord of host protect the community of the church. He will protect and deliver it. He will pass over and preserve it. In that awful night when the destroyer was in the land of Egypt, Jehovah stood on guard, as it were at every blood sprinkled door. The destroyer of death that executed judgement upon every first born in the land of Egypt, became lame, halted, leaped and pass over the community of the people of Christ. God says when I see the blood I will pass over you. I call it supernatural favour. We would be spared from pending judgment. The destroying angel would take the first born of the Egyptian but he would pass over the Hebrew household when he saw the blood on the top and side posts.
3. The Passover is a family affair
You will notice the phrase; ‘Address the whole community of Israel.’ Another phrase is ‘The entire community of Israel will do this – at dusk.’ The word ‘homes’ was used. Phrases like ‘A lamb for the family’, ‘One lamb for a house.’ The whole family is placed under the protection of the God of the Universe. The whole church will be placed under the protection of God. The God of the Universe will protect the home. God is addressing the whole church of Jesus Christ as well as individual homes. The interesting point is that God puts the emphasis on the family here because the family comprises the building block out of which the church was made. An old cliché says, ‘No nation is stronger than the families of that nation.’ I want to say that no church is stronger than the families of that church. The point of emphasis in this chapter is not just the blood but the family. As much as the Israelites have become a nation and God is going to deliver them, but He will do it by families and by the individuals in the family. Likewise as much as Evangel have become a church, God deals with us by families and by individuals. We are launching the DJ Cells today. The DJ Cells originate from the book of Acts where it was said that they break bread from house to house. God is definitely interested in families in homes because it is the individuals, the families that form the church. There was to be a lamb in every house. Jesus must be in your house. The lamb, or course also speaks of the blood that will be put on the doorpost. The scripture did not say anything about the lamb being too little for household. This would not happen. The lamb is sufficient. Jesus is always sufficient. Each individual in each family is to receive a part of the lamb. And all Israelites must take part in the meal. (Exodus 12:11, 47 CEVUS06).The Passover is to be a personal, private matter. Yes it is for the redemption of the nation, or for our case the church, but it centres in the family. It must be received and accepted by each individual members in the family. The Passover is a family affair. Listen, God is presenting the modus operandi (the method of operation) by which He is going to save individuals. No one is saved because he is the member of a nation or a church or a family. Take, for example, the account of the Philippian jailor and the salvation of his household as told in Acts chapter 17. His family was not saved because the jailor believed, but because each member of his family made a transaction with the lamb, each had to partake of the Lamb.
Everyone within the household must ‘eat’. Eat represents fellowship with Christ. You must have a relationship with Christ. Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you (John 6:53). I know that today you to church but individually each and every one of us has to have a relationship with Christ. Why do we have communion once a month. It is an ordinance set by God to eat of the bread, to partake of the fellowship with Christ. If we don’t partake of the bread we are not in fellowship with Christ. It represents the need to have daily communion with God not only as a church but as an individual.
